Summary of ALK
Product Licensing
ALK products now include an activation-based software licensing scheme. This
allows our product to be installed with specific features on specific hardware
for ALK customers, and it enables customers to purchase and unlock the features
they need. ALK software products are delivered with a product key, which
describes the purchased features. This product key is coupled with a license
number which is created by the ALK software when it first runs on your machine.
ALK uses the product key and license number to generate an activation code
which will unlock your software for normal use.
For specific products, this entire process is automated over the internet when
you run your software for the first time. However, activation codes can also be
obtained manually via our web site or by
email at activate@alk.com for MILER
products and activatecp@alk.com for
CoPilot products.
Initial Activation or Upgrade of
your ALK Software License
Initially activating and/or upgrading your product license is accomplished by
entering an activation code into your ALK product's license management screen.
Examples of optional features include additional street-level or international
data regions, or enabling real-time traffic updates (planned North American
availability later in 2003). For CoPilot products, tap Tools->Update License
followed by the Activate button. For PC*MILER products, run the License Status
utility typically found in your Start Menu->PCMILER program group. The
license status screen will display your license number, which will be important
when obtaining your activation code.
Transferring or Deactivating your
ALK Software License
Once your product has been activated on your hardware (PDA or PC), that product
key cannot be used on another device unless it is first deactivated on the
hardware where you have it installed (this statement does not apply to network
products). Users who wish to install their ALK software on new hardware can do
so by a) deactivating the software on the current device, and b) installing the
software and activating on the new device. This requires the following steps:
a) Open your license manager screen (see comments in the Activation section
above) and click the Deactivate button. Confirm that you wish to deactivate the
license on the current hardware. Note that your ALK software will no longer run
on this device after this step.
b) A deactivation code will be displayed. Enter the deactivation code and your
product key into the ALK product deactivation web page at
http://activate.alk.com/deactivate . This page will confirm that your
product key is now available for activation on your new device.
c) Your software can now be installed on your new hardware using the same
product key.
